THREADS OF WISDOM
Over the years, we have gathered quite an abundance of quilting insights. We hope that a few of these will inspire you along your own quilting journey. Remember to have fun! It’s not a race. It’s not a competition. It’s a journey, meant to be enjoyed.
1. Nothing about quilting is difficult. It just takes practice. Every quilter began the same way, trying to figure out how to quilt and mastering skills.
2. Fabric cutting 101. Measure three times. Cut once.
3. Sewing machines are a personal choice. Try before your buy. They are not all the same.
4. Quilting is not about perfection. It’s about production. Do not obsess over mistakes or bad choices. People will never notice your mistakes. But they will embrace the feeling your quilt gives them.
5. Learn quickly that all fabrics are not the same. With each type of fabric the end result is different. Don’t assume you need to use the most expensive fabric. Some of the most beautiful quilts throughout history were produced using flour sacks, clothing and rags.
6. Don’t compare yourself to other quilters. We are all unique and possess abilities that cannot be duplicated. That’s why you see so many quilt designs and techniques. Create what speaks to you. That’s the foundation of an good artist. Don’t design for other’s opinion.
7. Quilting is suppose to be a time-honored craft of patience and joy. If you rush, you will lose the joy. Slow down and remember are you creating, not mass producing.
8. You can make your quilting journey more enjoyable with the right tools. Do your research and find out what tools can save you time and money. Invest in what works. Do not buy cheap. They will break and you will have to replace them.
9. Not all threads are the same. Do your homework. Never buy cheap thread, of you will spent more time dealing with broken thread than quilting.
10. All quilters have an addiction to fabric. If you walk into a fabric store and say, “I’m not going to buy anything. I’m just looking.” And you then walk out with $200 worth of fabric with no pattern, it’s okay. We have all been there.
11. Video tutorials are your friend. Learn from others. We are a community of supportive and giving people from all over the world. YouTube is your friend.
